    Degree Objectives

    Upon completion of the program, you should be able to independently:

    • Develop and understand how to implement legally sustainable and ethical HR planning, recruitment, selection and retention processes; training programs; performance management and appraisal systems, feedback and disciplinary measures; implement compensation, benefit, and reward systems; and personnel policies and labor-management practices
    • Recognize opportunities and understand how to implement activities that foster constructive organizational change through commitment, motivation, teamwork, wellness, safety and values
    • Contrast international HR practices across various cultures and recognize necessary adjustments for cross-cultural differences
    • Utilize technology in HR practice
    • Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication, including presentation skills and interpersonal skills
    • Discuss the role of HR as a partner in the corporate strategy formulation and implementation
    • Critically analyze and form action plans to address HR operational issues and implement sound solutions

    Industry Statistics 

    Candidates with a certification or a master’s degree – particularly those with a concentration in human resources management or an MBA – have the best job prospects. In 2020, the median annual wage of human resources managers was $121,220. The employment of human resources managers is also expected to grow by 6% over the next 8 years, creating over 10,000 new positions by 2029. Therefore, professionals with advanced degrees and a solid background in human resources programs, policies and employment law should have better job opportunities (Occupational Handbook, Bureau of Labor Statistics).

  • Courses

    The online MSHRM program begins every Fall semester (August) and every Spring semester (January). Cohorts are structured into “blocks” or sessions, with each block consisting of two courses and lasting approximately eight weeks.

    Critical Thinking in Human Resource Management MAN 6317

    This course focuses on developing critical thinking skills to solve complex and multidimensional human resource management problems. It will emphasize the analysis and discussion of real cases and scenarios about human resource disputes.

    Employment Law and Human Resource Management MAN 6403

    This course focuses on the legal and regulatory factors surrounding human resource management. The emphasis will be on creating awareness of legal risks and legal constraints when making HR business decisions.

    High Involvement Human Resource Management MAN 6327

    This course focuses on human resource practices that motivate and empower employees by fostering their participation and involvement in organizational decision-making. Motivational and leadership theories, including participatory decision-making, self-managed teams and total quality management will be reviewed.

    Human Resource Knowledge Management MAN 6359

    This course focuses on the management and development of an organization’s human capital. Topics include the identification of learning needs in line with the corporate strategy, current and future performance problems, and individual development of a culture.

    Human Resource Analytics MAN 6316

    This course focuses on the links between human resources and an organization’s financial plan. The processes of analyzing, benchmarking, controlling, and measuring the effectiveness of human resource programs will be discussed.

    Human Resource Strategy and Planning MAN 6385

    This course discusses strategic planning in the context of human resource management. Topics include the development of mission statements, the identification of the organization’s competitive advantage and core competencies, and the development of corporate and business strategies.

    International Human Resource Management MAN 6626

    This course looks at decisions about how to recruit, train, compensate, and manage global employees. Topics include cross-cultural differences in values, and managing international assignments.

    Labor Issues and Conflict Management MAN 6297

    This course offers students techniques and skills to enhance conflict management of disputes. It is designed to teach methods to manage interpersonal disputes between/among parties productively, with emphasis on building partnerships and long-term positive relationships.

    Performance and Talent Management MAN 6347

    This course focuses on the development and implementation of effective performance management systems. Topics include the design of valid performance management measurement systems, electronic performance monitoring, diagnosing performance problems and implementation issues.

    Reward Systems Management MAN 6336

    This course covers all aspects of compensation and reward systems, such as the strategic alignment of compensation and other HR systems, job evaluation, merit- and skill-based pay, cost-effective benefit programs, and the increasingly flexible compensation systems demanded by today’s dynamic and diverse work force.

    Staffing Organizations MAN 6365

    This course focuses on the identification, recruitment, selection, and promotion of successful employees. The development of systems that comply with regulatory issues, such as equal employment opportunity and affirmative action laws, while satisfying business goals, will be covered.

    Wellness Management MAN 6157

    This course focuses on managing employee safety, security, mental, attitudinal, and health-related outcomes. It also discusses managing absenteeism, turnover, and counterproductive behavior. The course covers attitude surveys, OSHA, and security and safety audits.

    Professional Development Seminars

    To strengthen students’ marketability and competitiveness, seminars are mandatory, 1-3 credit courses.

    Finance for HR Professionals (Mandatory) (1 credit)

    The purpose of this professional development seminar is to provide a broad overview of the key financial terms, tools, and reports used in organizations. Designed for an HR audience, this seminar focuses on the financial knowledge that is most critical for HR professionals. Through a series of tutorials and exercises, students will learn key finance terms, as well as how to read income statements and balance sheets.

    Select one from the following options (1 credit)

    Option 1: MAN 6356 Career Services Professional Development I

    Professional development seminar focused on interviewing, resume and cover letter writing, and networking. Students will be advised by their career advisor on best practices to market themselves professionally.

    Option 2: HR Internship (1-3 credits)

    An HR internship course will be required in place for MAN 6356 in order to provide an enriched learning experience. Internships are supervised by the Faculty Director who interacts with the student and the employer or organization that provides the internship. Consultation with the Faculty Director to secure approval is required before the internship begins. The internship should provide a new learning experience for the student intern (Effective Fall 2014).

    Residency Information (Not Mandatory)

    FIU’s online Master of Science in Human Resource Management is unique from other online programs in that it incorporates a face-to-face residency, which adds critical educational and networking opportunities for students to interact with classmates, alumni, faculty, and industry professionals. The annual MSHRM Residency is an optional networking opportunity presented to students who would like to expand their HR network and further network with the HR community. Students get to attend planned networking events to bring them closer to their University and have the opportunity to meet their peers and advisory board members.

    The residency is a 2-3 day event where online students are invited to campus to participate in a series of professional development workshops and networking opportunities together with on campus students.

    The residency will take place in Miami, FL. The 2019 residency was hosted on campus in congruence with an HR Human Capital and Technology conference co-sponsored with IHRIM and FIU.

    Students are responsible for their personal transportation expenses; however, all other costs (lodging, meals, registrations) related to these residencies are covered by the program.

    Admissions Requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the MSHRM program, applicants must demonstrate academic and professional preparedness. Admissions are based on a portfolio approach:

    • Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

    • GPA in upper divisions course work (3.0 preferred)

    • Professional experience in human resources*

    • Full-time work experience*

    • GMAT or GRE**

    • Statement of Purpose

    • Two letters of recommendation

    Interview may be requested upon submission of complete portfolio

    *A minimum of five years of professional full-time work experience of which three years are in human resources is preferred. If no work experience, a graduate degree from an accredited university with a minimum 3.0 GPA may be considered

    **GMAT/GRE may be waived for experienced applicants with strong academic credentials.

    Graduate student applicants whose studies were completed in a non-English speaking country must demonstrate proficiency in English by presenting a minimum score of 80 on the iBT TOEFL (equivalent to 550 on paper-based version) or 6.5 overall of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). 


    Admissions Documents

    The following must be submitted:

    • Online master's programs   application  ($30). Be sure to select 'Master of Science in Human Resource Management.' You may complete the online application and submit it before taking the GMAT, GRE or TOEFL, if required.

    • Official transcripts from all previously attended universities. A copy of the diploma is needed if the degree is not posted on the transcript. 

    • Current and professional resumé.

    • Statement of Purpose (one-page essay describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing this degree at FIU (at least 500 words in length).

    • Two letters of recommendation.

    • Florida residents: copies of two (2) documents confirming that you have maintained residence in Florida for the past 12 months. Please view affidavit form and list of acceptable documents   here.

    Once a candidate is accepted into the program, he or she will be required to submit a non-refundable $200 admission deposit, which will be applied toward the total program cost.

    International Students

    • Official TOEFL/IELTS passing scores, if required. When requesting official scores, please refer to FIU Institution code 5206. TOEFL / IELTS scores are valid for two years.

    • Official transcript translation.  If official transcripts are not in English, a second copy of the transcript must be requested for translation by an official translation agency. Both the official translation, as well as the original transcripts, must be submitted to FIU.

    • A copy of diploma (an official copy may be requested in certain cases)

  • Tuition

    Pursuing your degree is one of the best investments you can make – one that will open doors to personal and professional opportunities. Our tuition costs represent some of the best value in higher education, and we also offer financial aid support you need to reach your goals.

    The total cost of the program is approximately $35,000.00 for Florida residents, non-Florida residents and international students. Students pay for courses at the beginning of each semester.  Please note, tuition and fee amounts vary by term and all amounts stated are subject to change.

    Under the revised Florida Board of Governors’ (BOG) Regulation 8.002, all institutions of the State University System (SUS) of Florida are required to provide students with a side-by-side Tuition and Fees comparison for continuing education programs.     Ravi S. Gajendran
    Dr. Gajendran has a PhD in Organizational Behavior from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania and has taught courses on organizational behavior, leadership, and human resource management at PhD, MBA, and undergraduate levels. His areas of research expertise include leadership, telecommuting, and human capital development. His research has been featured in several prominent media outlets including New York Times, USA Today, Fox Business News, Entrepreneur.com., Inc.com, and Forbes. He has also been published in Harvard Business Review and Business Today.

    Nathan J. Hiller
    Dr. Hiller has a PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania and is the Academic Director of the Center for Leadership and an Associate Professor of Management and International Business at FIU. As a consultant and practitioner, Nathan has worked on cutting-edge projects related to leadership development, organizational change, and teamwork with clients such as Boston Scientific, Hewlett Packard (HP), Bacardi USA, Norwegian Cruise Line, Novartis, and The Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

    Juan Sanchez
    Juan I. Sanchez is professor of management and international business and Knight-Ridder Byron Harless Eminent Chair of Management at FIU. He is a Public Member of the U.S. State Department’s Board of Examiners of the Foreign Service, and a member of the Social Security’s Occupational Information Advisory Panel. Professor Sanchez occasionally serves as an expert witness in cases involving human resource management disputes. He has consulted with multiple organizations and government agencies, including the National Academy of Sciences, the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Department of Labor and the Veterans Administration.

    Mary Ann Von Glinow  
    Dr. Von Glinow is the Knight Ridder Eminent Scholar Chair in International Management and director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at FlU. She has authored over 100 journal articles and 11 books on her areas of interest, which include globally distributed work and organizational behavior. She heads an international consortium of researchers delving into “Best International Human Resource Management Practices” and has received an NSF grant to study globally distributed work.
